Phillips Idowu and Jessica Ennis have taken prime awards at today’s Sports Journalists Association awards in London.

The men’s triple jump world champions was recognised for his medal winning personal best leap of 17.73m in Berlin in August taking the Outstanding Performance award.

Ennis’s achievements in lift the women’s World heptathlon title at the same event a year after injury forced her to miss the Olympic Game meant she was selected for the Sports Woman of the Year accolade.

It is a timely boost for the duo, both nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the year and underlines athletics’ recognition as the number one Olympic and Paralympic sport.
