About Alfa and UKA
Alfa Romeo has been the ‘Official Car Supplier’ to UK Athletics since 2006 and provides a fleet of vehicles to UKA coaches, staff and athletes, as well as a financial contribution to help support the UKA programme.
To date, Alfa Romeo has been incentivising and rewarding athletes for their performance at major championships, awarding cars to medalists at both the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and at the 2009 and 2011 World Championships.
In May 2010, Alfa Romeo launched an initiative to reward four athletes on the World Class Performance Programme, who have given much to the sport and have demonstrated ‘Passion, Performance and Pride’ – key qualities that fit with Alfa’s ‘Cuore Sportivo’ (‘Sporting Heart').
In the Summer of 2011 Alfa Romeo persuaded Kelly Sotherton, Lisa Dobriskey, and Iwan Thomas to strip naked for a series of power and beauty themed photographs. The 'Without Heart We Would Be Mere Machines' activity helped raise over £10,000 for the Heart Research UK Charity.
Alfa Romeo also staged a race with a difference in 2011. Man vs MiTo saw Iwan Thomas (on foot) race around a 3.8 mile course in the City of London against Andy Turner and Chris Tomlinson (MiTo). To view the video please see below:
2012 started with a bang for Alfa Romeo, travelling up and down the country to run a series of athletics master classes. Entitled 'Home Town Heroes' the master classes are aimed to give budding young athletes the chance to learn from Alfa Romeo's athlete ambassadors. They kicked off the year with a trip to Wigan alongside Jenny Meadows for an 800m master class at her old school. They then headed onto Nottingham Athletics Club for a unique hurdling master class with Andy Turner. This was followed by a Long Jump master class in Middlesborough at Chris Tomlinson's secondary school.
Alfa Romeo are also helping 1500m World Championships Silver medallist, Hannah England, kick start her second challenge of 2012, to learn to drive and pass her driving test. Good Luck Hannah!
