SPAR Stars
For 2011, SPAR have tied the Spar Sprints programme to the UKA Futures scheme, underpinning the World Class Performance Pathway by working with talented athletes aged between 17 and 20. Up to 40 athlete/coach pairs across all discipline are selected each year to be part of the Futures programme and SPAR is supporting the sprinters.
These ten young sprinters from across the UK will receive support, both financial and athletic, from SPAR and UKAto enable them to develop as professional athletes and hopefully perform at the highest level in years to come.
Highlights from this year’s programme will include a familiarity trip to the SPAR sponsored European Indoor Championships in Paris where the athletes will find out first hand what it’s like to be at a major championships and receive expert mentoring from top British athletes. As well as financial support, they will also be given kit, travel support to get them to their competitions in the UK and food allowances. Throughout the year, they will gain invaluable experience in dealing with the media and at the end of it, the Outstanding Athlete of the Year will be voted for and crowned.
With the London 2012 Olympic Games round the corner, we’re already looking to kick start their legacy by helping identify and nurture the future British sprint stars beyond 2012.
UKA Strategic Head of Coaching & Development Kevin Tyler said
“We’re delighted about SPAR’s ongoing support for our young athletes. The partnership is a perfect fit for our athletes who will benefit enormously from SPAR’s continued sponsorship and support, allowing them to achieve their performance goals and reach their potential to deliver global medals for Britain in the future.”
